Last Exile

I can't remember if I've said much about this show. But, Last Exile is quickly becoming one of my favorites of this season. First off, it's a Gonzo show. For some reason I seem to like a good 90% of what they get involved with. This one started out a little slow though. The first two episodes were really kind of setup for everything else going on. As a result, not a lot was going on. But with the last few episodes things are getting a little more interesting. They are definitely not rushing the plot though, which is a good thing IMHO. Alvis also gets my vote for one of the cutest characters this season. They've done a really good job with the writing for her.

The other interesting thing with this show is that there is much noticeable computer animation in this show. For the most part though, it works. It isn't as jarring as I've seen it in other Gonzo shows. And this is another show with a great theme song. Very interesting sounds.

(I really need to stop posting this stuff to my real blog first by mistake.)

I was wondering. :)

Anyway, having just seen ep1, I find it hard to understand why you'd call that "slow"!

I think slow as in overall storyline. There's action, but it takes a few episodes for the story to get more underway. (even now it is still really only just emerging).

Last Exile is good stuff. I think that Gonzo has a magnus opus in mind that tries to put out a big story with a big cast of people with big machines.

Blue Submarine No.6 is the first example I can come up with this. Unfortunately for that series, the CG wasn't up to snuff, the story felt too rushed over too few episodes to have as big an impact as it could have...

I think Last Exile is Gonzo taking another stab at telling an epic story and it seems they have taken pains not to repeat a lot of the issues I had with Blue Submarine No.6.

I own all four single episode DVDs for Blue Submarine No.6. Even with its faults, I like it. I think it was a very courageous project to undertake and I thought it was the first try at what the future of anime would be like. I was down on Gonzo because of personal disappointment, but Gonzo kept at it and improving and now we have something like Last Exile.

There's are three different Last Exile DVD packages for sale for the first DVD. The Regular, the Limited Edition with Box case, and a Limited Edition with Box case and Alvis figurine and mouse pad. I was trying to figure out how much of a fan I am to buy this now or wait for the U.S. version.

I love the way they embued the joy and feeling of flying with Claus and Lavi and their vanship.

I remember first seeing Renji Murata's character designs in the Power Instinct video game and thinking they were very good, but wondered why they weren't in any anime.
